Karma: Not the 30-Second Version
One of the oldest, most precise ideas in human history has been flattened into a bumper sticker. On this week’s episode, I take it back to what it actually means.
“What goes around comes around.” People say it like they understand it. Karma has become a scoreboard in the sky - a cosmic payback, the universe finally handing someone what they deserve. It’s tidy, it’s satisfying, and it’s misleading and we all deserve the more-than-TikTok-gives-us version.
I spent this episode taking karma apart and rebuilding it the way it was actually built - across three thousand years, five traditions, and more than one branch of modern science. And by the end you’ll understand that it stops being a fantasy about other people getting punished, and turns into something far more useful, and far harder to look away from.
Start with the word itself. Karma is Sanskrit, and at its root it doesn’t mean fate, and it doesn’t mean punishment. It means something so plain it’s almost disarming and that one shift is where the whole idea cracks open. I won’t hand you the rest here. But once you hear it, you can’t unhear it.
From there I walk through the traditions that spent centuries refining the idea, and each one moves it somewhere you won’t expect. The Upanishads, where your actions are doing something to you long before they ever come back around. The Buddha, who placed karma in a spot almost no one thinks to look. The Bhagavad Gita, with its quietly radical instruction about how to act at all. And the Jains, who described karma as something so nearly physical it will give you chills when you hear what researchers are now finding.
Because that is the part I find genuinely astonishing. There is science emerging - real, peer-reviewed, repeatable - that lands uncomfortably close to what these teachers intuited thousands of years before a laboratory existed. I lay it out in the episode. I won’t spoil what it shows. I’ll only say it changed how I think about what a person inherits, and what they pass on.
And then there is the sky. Long before karma became a caption, one planet carried the entire concept: Saturn, whom the ancients called the Lord of Karma. I get into what that actually means - the planet of time, structure, and consequence - and what it is to carry a Capricorn stellium, the sign Saturn rules. I speak to this one personally, because I live it.
How you treat people has a strange, patient way of finding its way back - not quickly, not loudly, and never on schedule. I have never had to chase it. I have only watched. The biggest rule is that if you abandon yourself, it is also a form of karma that may come back to hurt you. Karma is not revenge. It is something quieter, and far more exact. And understanding it does something: it frees you from a job you never needed to be doing. I also get into why the energy of revenge might turn that karma right back to you.
Because in the end, this episode is not really about the people who wrong you at all. It is about the only piece of karma that was ever actually yours to manage and most people spend years looking in the wrong direction before they find it.
This is karma with the history, the philosophy, the science, and the soul left in. Nothing dumbed down. Nothing dressed up.
